Twilight Island – Authentic Aurora Photo
I knew this might be the last real opportunity. Within days, the nights would simply be too bright.
I had chosen a shoreline about thirty minutes away. At 23:25, I saw a soft, green presence just above the fading twilight. I pulled over immediately. There are moments when you know you don’t have time to wait.
I stepped out and began setting up my camera. Everything felt right. Until I pressed the shutter. The message on the screen was short and unforgiving. No memory card.
There was no quick fix. Just a decision. Go back—or miss it.
Just before midnight, I was back. I grabbed the memory card and headed out again. I chose a location closer to home. I parked, stepped out, and set up again. This time, the camera responded. The first image appeared on the screen. And then I saw it—the battery. Almost empty.
This wasn’t over yet.
I reached into my bag and took out the spare battery. This time, I felt confident. I had remembered it. I replaced the battery, turned the camera on…
Empty. Completely empty.
That was the moment the frustration hit in full. Two mistakes. Back to back.
I packed up, got back in the car, and drove home for the second time.
As I headed out for the third time that night, I couldn’t help but shake my head slightly. This was turning into a night of mistakes.
But something told me not to give up.
I drove toward another beach, about fifteen minutes away. When I arrived, the aurora began to strengthen again. Soft arcs stretched across the sky, moving gently above the sea. The remaining light near the horizon created a subtle gradient—fading from pale tones into the deeper blues of night.
This time, everything worked. I photographed steadily. Allowed myself to breathe again.
After about half an hour, I made another decision. One more location.
There was a sandy beach I had known about for a long time, but never actually visited. Maybe I should check it out.
When I arrived, I understood immediately that it had been the right choice.
In front of me, the horizon still carried the last traces of twilight. And there—perfectly placed—was the silhouette of an island.
I set up the camera once more.
Above the island the sky came alive. The aurora intensified, pulsing and shifting with increasing energy. Waves of light moved across the sky, with patterns that appeared and disappeared in split seconds. It wasn’t just something to observe anymore—it demanded attention.
This was the moment everything came together.
[…]
I came back home at 02:42 and I was deeply satisfied. I had been able to capture something I will never forget—and now have the privilege to share.
